Artist Statement and Bio

Portraiture for me is about capturing the transitory moments of life -- the gifts of the given moment. Frame by frame, I attempt to bring a power of suggestion to my work, one which encourages the viewer to look and to feel.

The world of photography has been drawing me in over the last twenty years. In the beginning my family and friends were my favorite subject matter. Out of this early work my love of an intimate style of portraiture was born -- a quality which continues to define my work today. I now specialize in portraits of women and children shot in that style. The images I look for have a naturalness to them. They are individual, evocative. My hope is to provide images which go beyond individuals' previous photographic experience of themselves. At the same time, I want people to recognize themselves in their portraits.

In 2000 I received the Vision 20/21 Award, as well as a Nova Scotia Talent Trust Award, both in recognition of advancement within the visual arts. I graduated from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in 2001. Later that year I was recognized in competition by Women in Photography International for their 20th Anniversary Exhibition "Tea Time," with the image "Cup & Blue Nebula." I was awarded a Nova Scotia Arts Council grant in 2002. Later that year and again this year I attended The Maine Photographic Workshops. I am currently a member of Visual Arts Nova Scotia.
