Introduction
The Women in Photography International Archive was a grassroots, research-oriented
agency located in Arcata, California. The stated goals of the WIPI Archive
were: to identify, collect, preserve, and disseminate information about
women photographers. Such information has been gathered without a predetermined
bias for one particular "type" of photography: commercial and amateur
photographers, fine-art and performance photographers, photo journalists,
feminist imagemakers, filmmakers, etc. "Photo-related" activities and
professions are also tracked, including studio bookkeepers, retouchers
and colorists, Kodak finishers, camera clerks and the like.
