ARTIST STATEMENT
  In December 2002 I took an early retirement from my position as Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University, where I had taught and done research for more than 35 years. During that time I had the chance to travel extensively, professionally and personally, and to cultivate but not develop a passion for photography. I had some good images but I wanted to produce photographic essays on topics I felt were important.
  I had also not had time to live my dream of living in France, except for short periods of one to six months on various occasions.
  My retirement followed a semester of sabbatical in 2001, a partial move to Nice, France, and a research leave in 2002. During that time I began a multi-faceted, cross-cultural photographic project on aging. My time since retirement has been devoted to working on the portions of the project undertaken in the US (California) and Mexico, preparing book-length manuscripts for each, working on the publication and publicity/marketing of one of them, ALIVE WITH ALZHEIMERS, and preparing and offering exhibitions.
  The third phase of this project, dealing with care for the elderly in Japan, was begun in October 2004. I am currently obtaining the permissions needed to exhibit the images from that work. I hope to commence the fourth portion of the project, a study of end of life accompaniment in France, in 2005.

Cathy Stein Greenblat was born in New York. She received a B.A. from Vassar College and a PhD from Columbia University. She is Professor Emerita of Sociology at Rutgers University and currently lives in the US and in France.
